26th of June Madagascar celebrated its 61st anniversary of Independence . It is always a very joyful day and often a whole week of different events like with concerts. Fireworks are a must and they are far more popular than for a new years eve. It is the only day a year when people go out on the streets at night to simply be happy and and share it among one another. Children carry colorful lanterns and flags. Everyone is very friendly with a positive attitude.
Last year there was a round anniversary of 60 years but due to covid-19 all official celebrations in capitol city were cancelled. This year people could not hold their enthusiasm anymore and despite still no big events they gathered together more locally.
Our team celebrated with a nice meal in our volunteer house, starting with singing the national anthem.
A primary school in Ambatomasina celebrated a couple days earlier. All teachers and pupils dressed very smart for this well respected occasion. The school was decorated and all children received a small present. There was plenty of singing and dancing which is always the most favourite entertainment here. Everyone had a lot of fun.
Pupils of all schools were off classes for 3 days to spend that time with their families. You could hear a loud music everywhere for the whole weekend.
It is surely the biggest holiday in Madagascar.
Bonne fety isika rehetra !!!! Bonne fete!!! Happy Independence day Madagasikara !!!
